C’est pourquoi il est dit : «Que l'œil n’a pas vu, que l'oreille n’a point entendu, et qui n’est pas monté au cœur de l’homme, ce que Dieu a préparé pour ceux qui l’aiment». Mais à nous, dit-il, Dieu l'a révélé par son Esprit, «car l'Esprit pénètre tout». Et ce qu’il entendit, ce sont des paroles ineffables qu’il n’est pas permis à l’homme d’exprimer, des choses que lui pour sa part il entendit, parce qu’il

reçut l'expérience de la contemplation de ces choses intelligibles, pour autant que c’était possible, mais il ne put l’exprimer. Ce sont, en effet, des choses ineffables. L’attente done de la jouissance de ces choses presse toute âme fidèle de faire du progrès dans les vertus, car il est écrit: «Tu rends à chacun selon ses œuvres»; et ceci: «Il y a de nombreuses demeures dans la maison de mon Père»; L’attrait pour le cadavre rassemblera auprès de lui les aigles spirituels, parce qu’en lui ils trouveront leur joie éternellement. Car l'odeur qui monte de sa chair nourrit leur vie, comme celle des aigles, et leur vue sont comme leurs ailes grasses; les ailes de l'intelligence, en effet, sont les contemplations de la sainte Trinité dans laquelle est adorée la sainte unité du Père et du Fils et du Saint-Esprit, auquel soit gloire dans les siècles des siècles.
